Jordanian pioneers launch stargazing campground to enrich tourism in Wadi Rum

A group of Jordanian talented pioneers have launched a stargazing campground in Wadi Rum Jordan that aims at enriching the touristic attraction of Jordan and create jobs for local community.

The founders of RumSky have chosen Wadi Rum due to low light pollution and clear skies most of the year, noting that adding more attractions on the tourism map of Jordan will help elongate tourists’ stay in Jordan.

The pioneer team leader behind RumSky; Fayez Al-Khlaifat stated that RumSky is a sustainable and cultural project being run by a team of Jordanian astronomy experts.

RumSky experience, he added, takes guests away from city noise and its light pollution to enjoy seeing stars, planets and nebulae. It uses advanced technologies to help create sustainable jobs for the local community and increase income from tourism, Al-Khlaifat said.

He indicated that there is more than 200,000 visitors coming to Rum every year to enjoy the peace that rum desert engulfs its visitors with.

RumSky has been developed in collaboration with Jordan Astronomical Society and Sterland Skygazing in South Africa as consultants.

Al-Khlaifat emphasized on the social responsibility of RumSky and said it will open window for Astronomy researchers and the Education sector in Jordan to benefit from the project assets.

Tourists visiting RumSky enjoy a show comprised of a presentation on basic astronomy followed by a laser sky show run by astronomy professionals, Al-Khlaifat noted, pointing out that guests also enjoy seeing through deep sky computerised telescopes connected with satellites via GPS technology where they can see breathtaking events happening in the sky.
