In this video, experts explain that play gives children different sensory, physical and cognitive experiences. Experiences build connections in the brain, which helps children develop physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally. That\u2019s why children\u2019s play is like \u2018fireworks\u2019 going off in the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Different types of play<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unstructured, free play<\/strong>&nbsp;is the best type of play for young children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is play that just happens, depending on what takes your child\u2019s interest at the time. Free play isn\u2019t planned and lets your child use his imagination and move at his own pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of unstructured play might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>creative play alone or with others, including artistic or musical games<\/li><li>imaginative games \u2013 for example, making cubby houses with boxes or blankets, dressing up or playing make-believe<\/li><li>exploring new or favourite play spaces like cupboards, backyards, parks, playgrounds and so on.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can be part of your child\u2019s unstructured play \u2013 or not. Sometimes all you\u2019ll need to do is point your child in the right direction \u2013 towards the jumble of dress-ups and toys on her floor, or to the table with crayons and paper. Sometimes you might need to be a bit more active. For example, \u2018How about we play dress-ups? What do you want to be today?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Structured play<\/strong>&nbsp;is different. It\u2019s more organised and happens at a fixed time or in a set space. It\u2019s often led by a grown-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of structured play include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>water familiarisation classes for toddlers, or swimming lessons for older children<\/li><li>storytelling groups for toddlers and preschoolers at the local library<\/li><li>dance, music or drama classes for children of all ages<\/li><li>family board or card games<\/li><li>modified sports for slightly older children, like Cricket Blast, Aussie Hoops basketball, NetSetGO netball, Come and Try Rugby, and Auskick football.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How play develops with your child<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As your child grows,&nbsp;<strong>the way he plays will change<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 he\u2019ll get more creative and experiment more with toys, games and ideas. This might mean he needs more space and time to play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, children move through different forms of play as they grow. This includes playing alone, playing alongside other children and playing interactively with other children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Newborns and babies: play ideas to encourage development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For babies, the best toy is you. Just looking at your face and hearing your voice is play for your new baby, especially if you\u2019re smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might like to try the following play ideas and activities with your little one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Music, songs, gentle tapping on your baby\u2019s tummy while you sing, or bells: these activities develop hearing and movement.<\/li><li>Peekaboo: this is great for your baby\u2019s social and emotional development.<\/li><li>Gentle tickles, or objects with different textures, like feathers, mud, metal or foam: these develop the sense of touch.<\/li><li>Objects of different sizes, colours and shapes: these can encourage your child to reach and grasp.<\/li><li>Sturdy furniture, balls, toys or boxes: these can get your child crawling, standing and walking.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Regular\u00a0tummy time\u00a0and floor play are very important. Tummy time helps your baby develop muscle strength and control.
