\u00a0Minister of Justice, Bassam Talhouni, on Monday laid down the cornerstone for the Amman Criminal Court building in Jwaideh district, funded by the European Union under the “Support to the Rule of Law in Jordan” program.<\/p>\n
In remarks at the ceremony, Talhouni said the project, to be built over an area of 27000 sq meters costing approximately JD22.50 million, is designed to house, under one roof, all criminal commissions currently situated in different Preliminary Courts in Amman, amounting to 7 commissions, with the view of increasing them to 17 commissions.<\/p>\n
“The new Amman Criminal Court would facilitate judicial work, taking into consideration human rights by lessening the considerable long time taken in transporting convicted and detained persons to the courts,” he added.<\/p>\n
EU Ambassador, Maria Hadjitheodosiou, said that enhancing access to justice and allowing citizens to receive a more professional and qualified support is one of the main goals of the EU’s action.<\/p>\n
“The European Union funded program ”Support to the Rule of Law in Jordan”, aims to enhance the effectiveness, transparency, accountability and accessibility of the Rule of Law, in alignment with global democratic and human rights principles,” she added, noting that to achieve these objectives; the program will contribute to strengthening the institutional capacities of the judicial system with a focus on judiciary and law enforcement institutions.<\/p>\n
“It will also contribute to the improvement of criminal investigation skills, inter-agency cooperation and international judicial cooperation, public legal aid services and trial processes, while ensuring citizens\u2019 awareness of their rights,” she added further.<\/p>\n
