In its fifth year this year,\nthe forum will focus on board oversight, internal audit functions, financial\nrisk management and data innovations, aimed at central bank officials at the governor and deputy governor\nlevel, board members and senior staff with risk management, data and audit\nresponsibilities. A total of about 60 institutions will be participating in the forum, with\nrepresentatives from central banks and their external auditors, regional and\nglobal development and financial institutions from the Middle East, Europe,\nAfrica, Asia Pacific, and the Western Hemisphere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Ashraf Gamal El Din, CEO of the Hawkamah\nInstitute for Corporate Governance, said, \u201cWhile corporate governance refers to\nthe ways in which companies are directed, controlled and regulated, we must\nalso examine how governments approach their responsibilities and ensure that\nthe banking systems in their countries are sound. The effective governance of\ncentral banks is essential.&nbsp;The 2019 Central Bank Governance Forum is\npart of Hawkamah\u2019s ongoing focus on the governance of regulators.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other topics that will be discussed in this\nyear\u2019s Central Bank Governance Forum include the role of theCentral Bank\u2019s\nboard, good practices in terms of board composition, board effectiveness,\ninternal control bodies and the internal audit function in central banks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. George\nKabwe, Division Chief in the IMF Finance Departmentsaid, \u201cIn response to\nincreasing interest from various central banks, we have added a third day to\nthe forum. We will explore emerging issues facing central banks, including enterprise-wide\nfinancial risk management before and after the global financial crisis, lender\nof last resort operations, data analytics and financial technology (FinTech).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Established\nin 2006 to bridge the corporate governance gap in the region, Hawkamah, the\nInstitute for Corporate Governance was founded\nby the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the\nInternational Financial Corporation (IFC), the World Bank and other\ninternational organisations and by regional organisations including the Union\nof Arab Banks (UAB) and the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The International\nMonetary Fund (IMF) works to foster global monetary cooperation, secure\nfinancial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment\nand sustainable economic growth and reduce poverty around the world.Created in\n1945, the IMF is governed by and accountable to the 189 countries that make up\nits near-global membership.The IMF&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imf.org\/external\/np\/exr\/facts\/glance.htm\">primary purpose<\/a>&nbsp;is to ensure the stability of the international\nmonetary system,the system of exchange rates and international payments that\nenables countries (and their citizens) to transact with each other.
