Petra’s donkeys suffer as coronavirus cripples tourism

Herds of hard-working donkeys once carrying hordes of tourists on the rocky paths of Jordan’s Petra, famously called the ‘Pink City,’ are suffering as tourist numbers plummeted amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2019, the number of visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage site exceeded one million for the first time.

However, in March of last year, the famous wonder of the world was shut down, and the crucial income from tourists dried up.
