Jordanian-American doctors urge additional vaccine supplies to Jordan

A number of Jordanian-American frontline doctors have appealed to U.S. President Joe Biden and the chief executive officers of vaccine makers Pfizer and Moderna, Albert Bourla and Stéphane Bancel, to supply Jordan with enough vaccines as quickly as possible.
The appeal, which was prepared by Dr. Wael Husami and was supported by Dr. Monther Hmoud, Dr. Hala Shayeb, and Dr. Naderah Sweis and some other academic physicians in the U.S. , emphasized that healthcare is a human right which Jordan seeks to ensure that each individual living on its land will be provided with this human right.
They noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified Jordan as Level 4: Very High Level of COVID-19 in Jordan, which necessitates that vaccines be procured and administered as quickly as possible.
“Throughout its history, Jordan has provided safety and refuge for those fleeing violence and persecution in the region. Today, Jordan is host to 1.5 million Syrians and 2.2 million Palestinian and other refugees, out of a total population of 10 million,” the appeal read, stressing that accepting these large numbers of refugees presents a compelling case for consideration with regard to vaccine procurement.
The doctors stressed that the pandemic placed a tremendous burden on the health system and strained the resources of the government, noting that the number of vaccines allotted by the COVAX initiative has been “disappointing and insufficient” and would only fully inoculate three percent of the adult population.
They called on the U.S. government and the two companies to work directly with Jordanian authorities to provide them with urgently needed doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
“As Jordanian American frontline healthcare workers, we acknowledge the U.S. and Jordan’s strong relationship. While we acknowledge the high demand for vaccines throughout the world, we believe that Jordan’s role in regional stability and accepting large numbers of refugees presents a compelling case for your consideration”, the appeal concluded.
