A significant drop in mercury levels is forecast on Thursday, as a Khamasini dusty conditions will prevail nationwide, causing poor visibility, mainly in the Badia regions, with clouds at different altitudes, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its daily brief.

Toward night, the Kingdom will be affected by a wet and cold air mass accompanying a depression centered over Syria, bringing partly cloudy weather with a chance of spotty showers in the northern and central highlands, stretching to cover other regions.

Rainfall is forecast to become heavier after midnight accompanied by thunder and hail at times, while winds will be westerly active with strong gusts at times, exceeding 60 km/h in some areas, the JMD added.

The weather department also warned of slippery roads, flood formation in valleys and lowlands, including the Dead Sea, and of strong winds, as well as low horizontal visibility due to dust and sand storms in the Badia, urging the public, especially asthma patients and those who suffer seasonal allergy, to take precautions as the dust-laden winds pass through the Kingdom.

As we head into Friday, temperatures will continue to dip, making cold and cloudy conditions along with intermittent rain that may turn heavy with thunderstorms and hails in the early morning hours, the forecasters predicted, noting that winds will be northwesterly brisk and gusty, with speeds reaching 70km/h in some areas.

Mercury will rise again few degrees on Saturday, becoming above their annual average and bringing stable and pleasant conditions in most areas of the country, except in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Aqaba with easterly light winds, the JMD further said.

Temperatures in Amman today will reach a high of 19C, dropping to 8C at night, while the Gulf of Aqaba will see a high of 29C, dipping to 16C during night hours.
