JFDA conducts 318,988 food tests since year’s start

The Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) has conducted a total of 318,988 lab tests of foodstuffs since the beginning of the current year, the administration said in a statement on Sunday.

Only 1.5 percent of the foods failed the tests, JFDA Director General Nizar Mheidat revealed, adding that the administration applies the highest scientific criteria to ensure accurate examination of foodstuffs, whether local or imported.

According to Mheidat, Jordan’s annual food imports bill is estimated at JD2 billion, explaining that individuals in Jordan spend 38 percent of their annual income on food, 4 percent on alcohol and cigarettes, 7 percent on medicine, and 1 percent on cosmetics and nutritional supplements.

He indicated that JFDA monitors 90,000 types of foodstuffs that are mostly brought in via Aqaba and land ports.
