Former CIA agent sentenced to 19 years for spying for China

An American federal court on Friday sentenced a former agent of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to 19 years in prison, for espionage for China.

Lee had pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide China with national defense information before a judge at the Eastern District court of Virginia.

“Lee betrayed his own country and put his former colleagues at risk,” said Timothy Slater, assistant director in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Washington field office.

“The seriousness of his betrayal and crime is demonstrated by today’s sentencing,” he added.

In January 2018, Jerry Chun Shing Lee was arrested on suspicion of providing China with information about a web of US agents that Beijing dismantled between 2010 and 2012.
