U.S. State Department issues travel warning in Palestine

The U.S. State Department on Tuesday warned Americans about staying in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza, shortly after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Washington was softening its position on Israeli settlements.

The travel warning issued by the US embassy in Jerusalem advised U.S. citizens in or considering travel to or through Jerusalem, the West Bank or Gaza to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness in light of the current environment.

Pompeo declared Monday that Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land are not necessarily illegal, in a dramatic break with decades of international law.

“The Trump administration is reversing the Obama administration’s approach to settlements,” he said.
