Prime Minister Omar Razzaz said Saturday that Jordan is serious about achieving full health coverage for its citizens, noting the serious efforts made toward that end over the last decades.

“In Jordan, we have a full political will to achieve comprehensive health insurance,” he told a meeting organised by the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the World Health Organisation, noting that His Majesty King Abdullah has consistently directed governments to deliver on a comprehensive, fair and sustainable health insurance system.

“It is high time to find an integrated order in the field of comprehensive health coverage, in light of the existing infrastructure, database, vast experience, political will and effective partners in the public and private sectors, professional associations and legislative authority to place Jordan within the ranks of advanced nations in comprehensive healthcare coverage and medical tourism”, Razzaz said.

“Jordan has a reputed health sector in the region and the world, and that much is being spent on it, but the results are not up to the level we aspire to. There is still slowness in this sector with a large disparity in the level of services, which we are not satisfied with, and that there is a need to control the quality of service and cost, and to deliver the service to the beneficiaries,” he explained.

The prime minister pledged that his government will seriously take proposals by the meeting, saying that “the cabinet looks forward to the recommendations of this meeting to put them within a specific time frame, to start implementing them towards realizing the goal of comprehensive health coverage before the year’s end, and to translate His Majesty King Abdullah’s directives in the letter of designation (to the government)”, he pledged.

Today’s meeting was part of Jordan’s endorsement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the efforts of governmental agencies, the private sector and international organizations in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation to review its indicators and adapt them to the current conditions in Jordan according to its priorities and potentials, the Jordan 2025 Vision and Executive Development Program.

Health Minister Ghazi Al Zabin said that his Ministry is keen on providing all the requirements of comprehensive health coverage and access by all to health services without any financial difficulties, adding that coverage requires an enhanced health system, funding, sound regulations for the purchase of medicines and health technology, identifying the services covered, high-quality and affordable healthcare and qualified human resources.
