General strike observed by Palestinians, Arabs in Israel
Shaheennews –
Palestinians across the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip as well as Arabs in Israel on Monday joined in a general strike to denounce so-called Jewish nation-state legislation, which was passed by the Knesset (parliament) in July drawing world-wide condemnation.
Schools and businesses were closed along with public and private institutions as traffic slowed across the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Arab areas inside Israel.
National and Islamic forces urged all Palestinians inside and outside Palestine, refugee camps and the diaspora to join in the strike and carry out other “popular activities” to decry the legislation, which discriminates against Arabs.
They also called for strictly heeding the commercial strike, stressing collective action and unity of ranks to “counter US designs, which aim to liquidate the Palestinian cause and undermine the Palestinian fundamentals and unanimity on the refugees’ right of return, Palestinian self-determination and setting up a fully sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital”.
They were referring to US President Donald Trump’s decisions to move the US embassy to Jerusalem and cut funding to the UNRWA relief agency.
