King meets with world leaders taking part in UNGA

His Majesty King Abdullah II on Tuesday met with a number of world leaders participating in the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
His Majesty met with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, President of Kosovo Hashim Thaci, Macedonian President George Ivanov and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.
During his meeting with Lebanese President General Michel Aoun, the King and Aoun discussed relations between Jordan and Lebanon and ways to enhance cooperation in various fields as well as current developments in the region.
The meeting tackled the burdens of the Syrian refugee crisis on Jordan and Lebanon and the need for the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards host countries to enable them to continue providing relief and humanitarian services to the refugees.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of coordinating positions on various issues, particularly with regard to the Palestinian issue, and finding a just and lasting solution to it, as well as efforts to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
They also discussed regional challenges and crises and ways of reaching political solutions to them.
In another meeting, King Abdullah and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis tackled Jordanian-Romanian ties and ways of cementing bilateral cooperation, in tourism, military and information technology spheres.
The King stressed the importance of the European role in supporting efforts to reach a just and lasting peace between the Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of the two-state solution.
He also referred to efforts to combat terrorism and extremist ideology within a holistic approach.
During their meeting, King Abdullah and Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiadis discussed opportunities to develop cooperation between the two countries, especially in the economic, tourism and military fields.
The importance of the follow-up to the tripartite summit held in the Cypriot capital of Nicosia early this year, which included Jordan, Cyprus and Greece, was highlighted to broaden the horizons of cooperation and partnership between them.
The meeting tackled the latest developments in the regional situation, as well as regional and international efforts in the war on terror, within a comprehensive approach.
The King’s meeting with President Hashim Thaci of Kosvo focused on ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries in various fields, in addition to current regional developments.
The talks dealt with counter-terror efforts, stressing the importance of the Aqaba Meetings aimed at enhancing cooperation and coordination between the various regional and international parties to counter terrorism and extremist ideology.
The King also met with Macedonian President George Ivanov and reviewed the relations between the two countries and means of enhancing economic, trade and investment cooperation. The meeting tackled a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern.
In another meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, the strategic partnership between Jordan and the EU was discussed.
The King underscored the importance of reaching a just and comprehensive peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis, based on the two-state solution, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The meeting touched upon the massive burdens borne by Jordan as a result of the Syrian refugee crisis and the need for the international community to assume its responsibilities towards the host countries.
The meetings were attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs, the Advisor to His Majesty the King, the Director of His Majesty’s Office, and the Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations.
