Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission and IAEA Experts Conclude Review of Jordan’s Integrated Nuclear Security Sustainability Plan

Amman, 4 May 2024 – The review meeting of the “Integrated Nuclear Security Sustaining Plan for Jordan (INSSP)”, organized by the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), concluded last week, with the participation of the National Nuclear Security Committee members and Representatives of
the concerned authorities responsible for nuclear security.
In a press statement after the conclusion of the meeting, the EMRC Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Eng. Zeyad Alsaaydeh, explained that the mission aimed to review areas related to “Integrated Nuclear Security Sustaining Plan in the country by adopting a comprehensive approach to ensure the safe and secure use of radioactive and nuclear materials, facilitating the establishment of a national nuclear security system to address emerging challenges in the field of nuclear security, including potential cyber threats, and contributing to collective efforts aimed to enhance global security.
Dr. Zeinab Hassan, Nuclear Security Officer at the International Atomic Energy Agency, appreciated the cooperation with the EMRC and the participating parties, pointing out that the outputs of the mission will enable Jordan to establish and implement the necessary improvements of nuclear security system and measures, in particular the national nuclear security policy and strategy, the legislative and regulatory framework, the assessment of threats and risks related to nuclear security, the systems and measures for prevention of, detection of and response to malicious or unauthorized acts involving nuclear or radioactive materials for developing an effective and sustainable Jordanian nuclear security regime.
Eng. Alsaaydeh expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by all participants in the mission, which resulted in drawing a roadmap for nuclear security in Jordan within the framework of the existing cooperation between the Commission, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the relevant authorities to continue apply the highest standards of nuclear security in Jordan with its comprehensive perspective and strengthen the physical protection system in the Kingdom. He pointed out that the proposal for the executive plan for the next three years was developed based on the priorities that were agreed to be identified by the participants during the meeting
