Gov’t maintains cap on freight costs appraisals

The government on Sunday extended a defense order capping freight cost appraisals by the Customs Department for imported merchandize. A prime minister’s office statement said Defense Order No. 31 of 2021 will remain in force through June 30, 2022.
It explained that the move aims to ensure stable supplies and stockpiles of basic commodities and foodstuffs as well as prices. According to the order, the maximum freight cost valuation of a 20-foot shipping container originating from Asia and the Far East will be $2,000 and $4,000 for the 40-foot container.
As for containers originating from Europe, the valuations will be $1,500 and $3,000 for the 20- and 40-foot containers, respectively. With regard to shipments originating from North America, the freight costs valuations are capped at $1,700 for the 20-foot container and $3,400 for the 40-foor container.
According to Jordanian customs laws, freight costs are taken into account when valuating imported goods.
