Maritime passenger traffic through the port of Aqaba picked up by 124 percent in the third quarter of 2021, particularly in view of the gradual return to work between the port and Egypt’s Nuweiba.

Speaking to Petra, Secretary General of the Jordan Navigation Syndicate (JNS) Mohammad Dalabih on Tuesday said that the port’s passenger traffic increased to 133,000 passengers until September 2021, compared to 59,000 passengers in the same period last year, after more than a year of pandemic-related restrictions that were imposed to prevent the spread of the virus.

“A total of 1339 ships were docked at the Aqaba port in the first nine months of 2021, marking an increase of 13 percent compared with 1180 ships in the same period last year,” he added.

Dalabih indicated that the port’s handling process also mounted up to 10.9 million handlings in 9 months, while the number of wheeled cargo, shipped to the port via roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ships, reached 9425 vehicles, scoring an increase of 7.3 percent compared to the same period of last year.

Meanwhile, the official highlighted the 10.5 percent decline in the number of container traffic in 2021, due to the rise in freight fees, the reduction of imports, as well as the empty containers shortage.
