Jordan’s imports of grains through the Aqaba port picked up by 20 percent to about 518,000 tons in the third quarter of 2021, compared to 431,000 in the same period of 2020.

Secretary General of the Jordan Navigation Syndicate (JNS) Mohammad Dalabih told Petra on Tuesday that the rise was driven by increasing the Kingdom’s imports of wheat and other grains.

Livestock imports through the southern port of Aqaba since the beginning of this year have reached 153,000 heads of sheep, cattle and others, marking an increase of 17 percent compared to 131,000 in the same period last year, Dalabih indicated.

The volume of cargo entered the Kingdom by the Aqaba port inched up by 8 per cent in the first nine months of the current year to reached nearly 580,000 tons against 541,000 in the same reporting period of 2020, he added.
