وكانت تركيا أعلنت أنّها ستوقف استيراد النفط من ايران على الرّغم من معارضتها للعقوبات الأميركية التي فرضها ترامب بعد انسحابه بشكل أحادي من الاتفاق النووي المبرم بين الجمهورية الإسلامية والدول الكبرى.
وتدهورت العلاقات بين الولايات المتّحدة وتركيا بعد إعلان أنقرة انها ستشتري منظومة الدفاع الجوي الصاروخي أس-400 من روسيا، الخصم الأبرز لحلف شمال الأطلسي.

وتخشى الولايات المتحدة من أنّ التكنولوجيا المستخدمة في نظام أس-400 يُمكن أن تُستخدم في جمع بيانات تقنيّة عن الطائرات العسكريّة التابعة لحلف الأطلسي الذي تنتمي إليه تركيا، ما قد يسمح بوصول روسيا أيضاً إلى تلك البيانات.
وكانت الحكومة التركية اقترحت على الإدارة الأميركية تشكيل مجموعة عمل فنية مشتركة لتبديد مخاوف الولايات المتحدة بهذا الشأن.
